The Cenachero

Located in the popular marina square, where Malaga looks at the sea and its port, are two of the closest monuments in time and also closer to the people. This way of hanging the trays of fish, called cenachos, was typical of Malaga and the cenachero carried the cenachos as the sculpture reflects. He carried them on his shoulders, controlled with his elbows, which made it almost as if he was dancing while announcing it around in form of a proclamation, another of the traditional customs of the people of Malaga.

The artist from Málaga Jaime Fernández Pimentel immortalized this picturesque personage in a statue in 1968, inspired by a real fisherman called Manolo “The Petaca”.

The Biznaguero

The Biznaguero, located since 2003 in the park and showing another one of the ancestral traditions of these lands, the seller of “biznagas”, which are the flowers of the jasmine, strung one by one in a very special bouquet, another of the personages that proclaimed the sale of its merchandise in a traditional way and that still can now be seen only as a tourist attraction in the streets of Malaga. Months before the summer, a species of wild thistle called “nerdo” (Ammi visnaga) is collected when it is still green, which will serve as a skeleton for the biznaga. After removing the leaves and branches that are left to leave only the main stem and its corresponding spikes, it is been left to dry until it obtains a beige color and becomes hard. The stem and tips are then trimmed. The jasmines are collected in the summer evenings before they are opened so that it is easy to introduce them one by one in the spikes of the skeleton. At night, these jasmines will open giving thus the characteristic shape of the biznaga and its smell.
