The drive from Malaga Airport to Marbella takes 35-45 minutes and covers about 50 kilometres — and it’s one of the simplest airport transfers in Spain, with motorway from door to door. Here’s every route option, what the toll road costs, and why driving yourself beats any transfer for this particular journey.
Your three options at a glance
| Option | Time | Approx. cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car (A-7 free route) | 40-50 min | from €25/day, all-in | Freedom for the whole stay |
| Rental car (AP-7 toll route) | 35-40 min | + €4-8 toll | Summer traffic, tight schedules |
| Taxi / private transfer | 40 min | €60-90 each way | One-off trips without driving |
A return taxi already costs more than two or three days of car hire — and in Marbella you will want wheels: the best beaches, golf courses and white villages are spread along 30 km of coastline.
Route 1: the free A-7
Exit the airport following signs for Cádiz / Algeciras / A-7. The Autovía del Mediterráneo hugs the coast through Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengirola before reaching Marbella. It’s free, scenic in stretches, and fine outside peak hours. In July-August or Friday evenings, expect slow sections around Fuengirola and San Pedro.
Route 2: the AP-7 toll road
Same start, then follow AP-7 Autopista del Sol signs after Fuengirola. Three lanes, light traffic, cruise control territory. The toll between Fuengirola and Marbella runs roughly €4-8 (higher in summer), payable by card. When the A-7 jams, this is the best money you’ll spend all holiday.
