Although it is known as Mijas Town, it currently has almost 80.000 inhabitants and we can divide the town into 3 sections: Mijas Town, where you will find the historic centre; Mijas Coast (also known as Las Lagunas), which borders Fuengirola; and lastly, the coastal area of La Cala de Mijas.
What can you visit in Mijas?
One of the must-see places is the pilgrimage church of the Santuario de la Virgen de la Peña (Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Rock). We recommend that you visit the church in the morning as, at dawn, the rays of the sun will accompany you throughout your visit.
Another place that you must see is the town itself. You will fall in love with it while walking around the incredible and stunning white alleyways that traverse the whole town. They are all decorated with hand-painted flowerpots, accompanied by attractive ceramic plates and exotic plants.
After this, visit the town’s famous bull ring which is located near the highest point of Mijas. This bull ring is rather unusual as it has an oval shape and is one of the most picturesque bull rings in the whole of Andalucía. It was built in 1900 and is made of stone. Will you miss it?
Lastly, once on board the Volkswagen Golf head towards the Paseo de la Muralla. From this point, you will be able to see some beautiful views of Mijas.
In relation to gastronomy, Mijas is primarily based on starters. Particularly noteworthy is its great selection of soups. Garlic Cachorreñas, salmorejo, gazpacho and maimones win first prize. Also noteworthy are the desserts, such as doughnuts and turnovers.
